Damp rooms but delicious poke
This hotel was an overall OK experience for us when we stayed there for first three nights of our two week Hawaii adventure. The location on the eastern shore of Kauai is central and it was a good stepping stone for car trips up and down the coast. The beach outside the hotel is beautiful but not swimmable when we were there and we realised that it is also very far from the best on the island. The hotel offers the basic necessities of a resort ie a fair pool, happy hour in the bar as well as pastimes for the kids. What Courtyard at Coconut beach also did was to give us the false impression that a damp climate like this also means funky smelling hotel rooms - our first room on ground level smelled awfully and we asked to change after a jet-lagged night of bad air (kept AC off due to worse smell), sprinklers spraying our veranda door (!) and roosters taking the early morning shift to keep us awake. The reception staff was very understanding and gave us a somewhat better, somewhat less smelly room which we could live with the remaining two nights. It wasn't until checking in to the next (smell-free) hotel however that we were certain that Courtyard have a serious ventilation problem that they must deal with. Best thing: The snack menu and restaurant staff was great! Plus you get free Mai tais.
